A couple of major hitters are joining the fight against Georgia’s proposed Opportunity School District. The item is listed as “Amendment 1” on the November 8 ballot.
Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young and baseball legend Hank Aaron held a news conference Tuesday to urge people to vote against the measure that would allow the state to take over schools that are deemed “chronically failing”.
Under the plan, being pushed by Gov. Nathan Deal, a superintendent could be appointed with the authority to choose up to 20 schools for takeover. The state seizure would come after a school’s low performance for three consecutive years. A chosen school could either be turned into a charter, closed, or its administration let go.
