Speaking with HipHollywood about his new book Gone ‘Til November: A Journal of Rikers Island, Lil Wayne discussed his strained relationship with Birdman. “I’m 34, baby, I’m too old for friends,” he said about the possibility of ever being close with the producer again. “No, his last name isn’t Carter, baby. He’s not family.”

The comments are all the more revealing considering that Lil Wayne and Birdman have shared the kind of close mentor/mentee relationship that felt more like family than business. He’s been signed to Birdman’s Cash Money Records ever since he released Tha Block is Hot in 1999, and the pair even released the 2006 album Like Father, Like Son with Lil Wayne rapping on the track “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy.”

The two have been battling over a financial dispute that’s kept Lil Wayne from releasing his next album Tha Carter VLil Wayne has claimed that Cash Money and Universal Music Group owe him millions of dollars, even going so far as to sue both in order to reclaim lost profits.
