Explore an ‘Online Museum’ of Prince’s Digital Career

"Take a virtual walk through the timeline and remember when anything was possible."

By Hayden Wright

Despite Prince’s contentious relationship with the web and social media in the last few years of his life, he was, initially, quick to explore the possibilities of the internet. His first site, Prince Interactive, was founded in 1994 and nearly two dozen more were launched in the subsequent 20-plus years. This early adoption of web technology as companion to music created fervent hives of Prince devotees online, and now the archive of his official websites can now be viewed in one place: the Prince Online Museum.

“The Prince Online Museum was built by the people who worked directly with Prince on these projects,” the museum’s director Sam Jennings wrote in a statement on the site. “We are the originators, we are the experts. It is a labor of love, no money has been exchanged. There will be no downloads sold and no membership fees required. But we do have working versions of almost all of Prince’s official websites. Take a virtual walk through the timeline and remember when anything was possible.”

The Museum provides dates and other background about Prince’s various web endeavors, from the high-concept flash pages to musical experiences embedded in the images. With a devoted team at work to preserve these digital treasures, there’s much to discover for casual Prince fans and obsessives, alike.
