Kid Cudi Wants to Change How Hip-Hop Supports the LGBT Community

By Amanda Wicks

Kid Cudi wants to change how the hip-hop community responds to the LGBT community. On Sunday (June 12) he began a series of tweets pledging to be more vocal and supportive about gay rights.

“The Hip Hop community is the least outspoken about gay rights and Ima go out my way to change that,” he wrote. It wasn’t just fans who positively responded to Cudi’s tweets. Ty Dolla $ign tweeted back, “What Cudi said.” That began an exchange between the two rappers showing off their admiration for one another.

On Monday (June 13), Cudi continued retweeting the support he was getting and also shared Anderson Cooper’s moving speech about the victims. Cudi encouraged anyone who had an issue with the LGBT community to unfollow him.

Cudi’s response comes in the wake of the Orlando mass shooting on Sunday, the deadliest in the United States. Many musicians have already shared their thoughts about the event. Lady Gaga led a Los Angeles vigil Monday evening to honor the victims. Hip-hop has a contentious past when it comes to the LGBT community, but with younger rap stars speaking out in support that’s bound to change.
