I had the opportunity to attend the 2014 State of the City Breakfast this morning, where Mayor Kasim Reed talked about lessons from the past, his plans for the future, all while – believe it or not – bringing the funny!
The well-attended breakfast at the Marriott Marquis began with the traditional Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the National Anthem and a Color Guard presentation of flags.
And before Mayor Reed hit the stage, he told me he was excited about his speech, looked forward to sharing that the state of the city is strong and mentioned a really big item for 2014 – which is breaking ground on the new stadium; and input from the community on the infrastructure changes in the city that are going to be made in the future.
But he received a lot of laughs when he referred to the challenges he faced during those tough press conferences he conducted as the two 2014 winter storms blew through Atlanta.
He called the attack of “Storm Leon” and “Storm Tupac” (not the actual name) a double-blow and a lot to deal with in a two-week period. The laughs continued when he referred to himself as a “boring mayor” – adding that it was a fine title to have considering all of the mayors of other cities having such a tough time lately.
