Cause Of Death Of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly Determined
ATLANTA (WVEE)-The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office has released the cause of death of Chris Kelly of the `90s rap duo Kris Kross almost two months after his death. According to the medical examiner, Kelly died of a drug overdose.
A toxicology screening revealed that Kelly, 34, had a mixture of drugs in his system when he was pronounced dead on May 1, said Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office in Atlanta.
According to the Associated Press, Honey said she did not know which specific drugs Kelly had used before his death. However, a police report from the night of Kelly’s death said his mother told investigators her son used cocaine and heroin the night before he died and had a history of drug abuse.
Chris’ mother Donna Kelly Pratte issued a statement at the time of his death.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away today. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music and we will forever love him.” – Donna Kelly Pratte (mother) & The So So Def Family
Kelly and partner Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith were discovered by producer Jermaine Dupri in Greenbriar Mall, and helped launch Dupri’s influential So So Def label. Their multi-platinum debut, Totally Krossed Out, was released in 1992 and introduced their signature backwards style of dress.
After falling out of the public eye for more than a decade, Kelly and Smith performed at the So So Def 20th Anniversary concert in February.
