Just a few days ago it was reported that a Jimi Hendrix biopic titled All Is By My Side – starring Atlanta’s Andre “Andre 3000” Benjamin of hip-hop power OutKast – was scheduled to begin shooting in Ireland this month.
Last year, when the film was first announced, Experience Hendrix, the company that controls Jimi Hendrix’s music and publishing catalog, put out a press release saying that they have “…made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without (Experience Hendrix’s) full participation.”
With the recent reports that the film is about to begin production, it seemed that Experience Hendrix was on board with the project. Not so. Experience Hendrix put out a press release saying the following: “Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production. Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”
Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix (sister of Jimi), and the EH board said in the statement that they “have not ruled out a ‘biopic’ in the future though producing partners would, out of necessity, have to involve the company from the inception of any such film project if it is to include original Jimi Hendrix music or compositions.” In other words, the film could not use any Jimi Hendrix recordings or songs written by Jimi without Experience Hendrix being on board. For now, that seems to be the final word on the project.
