George Zimmerman took the stand at his bond hearing today and told the family of Trayvon Martin, “I am sorry for the loss of your son.” Zimmerman appeared in court before Circuit  Judge Kenneth Lester in an effort to get a bond for a second degree murder charge in the death of Martin.

Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara requested a bond of 15 thousand dollars.  Assistant State’s Attorney Bernie De La Rionda asked for no bond or bond to be set at 1 million dollars.

Judge Lester granted Zimmerman a 150 thousand dollar bail, he must wear an electronic monitoring device, he is to have no direct or indirect contact with the family. Zimmerman is to have no contact with firearms, no alcohol and he will be under a 7 pm to 6 am curfew. Judge Lester also told the prosecution and defense attorneys to decide on a safe location for Zimmerman to be taken once he is released. Zimmerman’s wife Shellie, a nursing student, his father retired magistrate judge Robert Zimmerman and his mother Gladys all testified that Zimmerman was not a violent person and that he was very interested in law enforcement and always “looked out for others.”

Previous arrests and issues with the law were brought up including a 2005 arrest for striking a plain clothes police officer and a previous domestic violence case with another woman.

Zimmerman had requested to speak to Trayvon Martin’s family, however both Tracey Martin and Sybrina Fulton denied that request.  Zimmerman then addressed the family in court from the witness stand. More in this report from CBS News

Martin’s parents were in the courtroom and both wept after hearing that Zimmerman was granted bond.

After the hearing, Martin family attorney Ben Crump said Martin’s parents were “very outraged” at the results of the hearing.
